Coinbase has secured registration from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission for its own U.S. derivatives clearinghouse, allowing the company to clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures and swaps in-house.
The registration, granted on Sept. 28, adds a clearing function alongside Coinbase's existing brokerage and exchange businesses. The CFTC's registration order authorizes Coinbase to operate the clearinghouse for the specified derivatives products.
The move consolidates key parts of the derivatives trading pipeline—brokerage, exchange and clearing—under Coinbase's own operations rather than relying on third-party clearinghouses.
