The US Treasury has formally brought digital assets into the financial sector's preparations for quantum computing threats. On Aug. 24, the department launched its Quantum-Readiness Task Force, dedicating one of three workstreams to digital assets and emerging-technology risks.

The other two tracks of the task force cover broader post-quantum cryptography adoption and third-party vendor readiness across the financial sector.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said: "America must lead in securing the technologies that power our economy. This Task Force will help ensure our financial system remains strong, secure, and competitive as new technologies reshape the global landscape."

Task Force Structure

  • Workstream 1: Digital assets and emerging-technology risks
  • Workstream 2: Post-quantum cryptography adoption
  • Workstream 3: Third-party vendor readiness

The initiative places digital assets, including Bitcoin, within the Treasury's official framework for addressing potential vulnerabilities that advanced quantum computing could pose to existing cryptographic systems underpinning the financial sector.
